Russell Crowe: Distance Induced Divorce?

By Dr. Jane Greer

Celebrity stars shine so bright and we look up to them.  Yet often we are puzzled when they fall, so Shrink Wrap is here to shed light on all.

Russell Crowe and his wife of 9 years, Danielle Spencer, announced their seperation this weekend. The two have known each other for decades, meeting in 1989 when they co-starred in The Crossing. They married in 2003.

Crowe (48) and Spencer (43) were on opposite sides of the globe when the seperation news broke, she at their palacial home in Australia, and he in Los Angeles shooting Noah, one of as many as six films he has coming out by the end of 2013.  While neither side is issuing comment, the lack of proximity may be part of the reason for their split.

As Russell worked non-stop in the US, Spencer, a successful singer, was also busy shooting the Australian version of Dancing With the Stars. In Russell’s absence, she struck up an off-camera friendship with her dance partner Damian Whitewood.  Well, at least they thought it was off camera!  In addition to her plutonic tweets of their outings to dinner and concerts, te paparazzi snapped the two coming and going in taxi cabs displaying a more-than-friends body language.

While there have been no offical accusations of cheating, Crowe himself has a history of being the object of an affair.  In 2000 he and Meg Ryan had a fling that ended her marriage to Dennis Quaid.  Notably, Ryan has gone on record to saying, “It’s very difficult to be a career person and have a relationship. I didn’t succeed at doing it at all. It’s incredibly hard.”  Whatever the reason, both Crowe and Spencer seem interested in finding long-term lovers in their same time zone.

The pre-nup is reported to promise her 20 million dollars in the event of a divorce.  The couple has two children; Charles (8) and Tennyson (6).
